Serger Basics: Use and care of Your Serger/Overlock Machine with Gloria Young
Saturday August 24th, 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the PNNAG office
Class fee: $25/PNNAG members; $30/non-members
Kit fee: Per Gloria: "There will not be a kit fee. The supplies that students will bring to class will just be 2 or 3 fabrics, probably 1/4 yard of muslin or medium weight woven cotton fabric and 1/4 yard of denim (though a couple of people could probably share the 1/4 yard). People could also bring 1/4 yard of knit fabric if they want to learn to work with that (again, a couple of people could probably share the 1/4 yard). The other supplies will be to bring their serger, cones of thread for the serger (3 or 4 cones, depending on the number required by their serger--I recommend the Maxi-lock brand), all the tools that came with the serger, the operating manual that came with the serger, a pair of scissors for cutting fabric (or a rotary cutter), a small pair of scissors or snips for cutting thread. The supply list, of course will be what Margaret D, send to people when they register for the class.
In addition, I do want to let people know that if they want to take the class, but don't own a serger, we do have a couple of sergers at the office (that were donated to PNNAG) that they can use in class to find out what these machines can do for them. The nice thing about PNNAG members learning to use the PNNAG machines is that they'd be able to make use of the machines for their projects, even if they do not want to purchase a serger for themselves."
Learn to use and care for your serger; thread the quick way and from scratch, choose the right needles, threads, and stitch length, balance tension, where and how often to clean and oil, turn outside corners, convert to a rolled hem, what kinds of decorative threads work and where they go on the machine for dffferent stitches and projects. Gloria has taught serger classes since 1983.
